Review:

*I received an eARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Dirty Secret is a second-chance romance featuring Conner Burke, lead singer of Dirty B, and Sofie Callahan, the girl next door. Sofie disappeared 2 years prior without a trace, leaving Conner heartbroken and confused. Now that she’s back, Conner is determined to find out why she left in the first place and if they can mend what’s broken.

I liked Dirty Secret, a lot. There were many times I was left breathless from the chemistry between Sofie and Conner, and many times I wanted to throw my Kindle against the wall because of them. I love when a book can make my heart race from equal parts excitement and anger.

I have to admit, I was not a huge fan of Sofie for the majority of the book. I think her actions were immature and irrational and I really wasn’t on board with her reasoning. I also could not for the life of me understand why she would be upset when Conner was angry with her. I think he had every right to be angry and I think he treated her more respectfully than most people would in his situation.  I think her saving grace for me was that even though I didn’t agree with her logic, I could on some level understand it and forgive her naiveté.

Conner, however, was another story. He’s a rock star with a down-to-earth attitude which is seriously hot. I found him to be endearing and although he was pretty quick to forgive Sofie, I think he was the more mature of the two characters and I respected that. I loved his Southern charm and I loved the way he loved Sofie and Mila. His interactions with Mila may have been what made this book for me. I could feel myself smiling and my heart swelling with every interaction between the two.

My favorite part of reading a new series from Emma Hart is meeting all the characters. I think she is fabulous at creating characters with distinctive personalities. I have never found one unmemorable.  I am so excited that this will be a series because I cannot wait to see more form the Burke brothers, especially Tate. I found Tate’s stand-offish behavior to be intriguing and I was ecstatic when Mila was able to deflate his tough guy persona. I was also a really big fan of Leila, the Burke sister. She was such a spit-fire and I loved that she had no problem telling Conner and Sofie when they were being childish. I know this series is called The Burke Brothers but I would be more than happy to read Leila’s story. (hint, hint)

Dirty Secret is chock full of romance, drama, and hilarity. I was furiously turning pages to find out what was going happen next between Sofie and Conner, would they or won’t they? Although I struggled with Sofie as a character this didn’t really affect my enjoyment of the story itself. I don’t have to like a character but I need to be able to at least know the why of their behavior. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next Burke Brothers book!

Excerpt:

That kid that could be mine. I get up and let the empty bottle drop to the floor. The woods are eerily quiet, as if it can sense my anger. As if it knows the bitterness that lingers in my veins, as if it knows the burn of not knowing anything.
Like the woods, I’m left in the dark. Completely.
Branches and twigs crunch under my feet as I increase my pace to a gentle jog. And again, to a slow run. Then to a sprint.
The need to know increases with every footstep, as evenly paced as the ticking of the clock. It doesn’t matter that I’ve probably drunk too much beer to be here or that we’ve only been back for a matter of days.
I can’t be in this shithole full of memories without knowing. I can’t move on until I know. I can’t forgive her for a single fucking thing until I know—and even then, maybe I won’t be able to.
Maybe she’s unforgivable.
Instead of knocking on the back door like I did yesterday, I round the side of the house to the front door. The front room light glows softly through the curtains, but the rest of the house is dark.
My chest heaves with the exertion of my run here and I grab the doorframe to balance myself. I’m definitely too fucking drunk for this conversation, but what the hell.
I bang on the door, once, twice, again and again and again. “Sofie! Open the fuckin’ door!”
“Shut up!” she hisses, yanking it open. “The hell’re you doing here?”
I smirk, leaning against the wall. “Shouldn’t I be askin’ you that, princess?”
“Are you drunk?” Her voice rises a little at the end, and her eyes widen.
Those eyes. Fuck, those baby blues that have always undone me.
“Drunk? No. If I was drunk I’d be sitting at home like a miserable bastard and not here facing the cause of my misery.”
“You’re being an asshole. I don’t have to listen to this.”
She pushes on the door, but I wedge my foot in front of it. I let go of the wall and grab the edge of the door.
“Actually, you do.”
She can’t overpower me, and she knows it, because she lets up and the door swings open. “Why are you here, Conner?”
“You have a kid.”
She smacks her lips together. “Yep.”
“When? When did you have her?”
Sofie takes a deep breath in and presses her hands to her stomach. They’re shaking, even as she links her fingers to hide it. I can see that fucking tremble.
She whispers something but I’m too pre-occupied by her hands to hear it.
“What?”
“August last year,” she repeats, still a whisper.
August. Last year. My stomach clenches as I meet her eyes. “When? When in fuckin’ August, Sofie?”
“August fifteenth.” Her voice hitches halfway through the ‘fifteenth.’
Almost seven months to the day she walked out on me and the rest of Shelton Bay.
Adrenaline hums through my body, and I stare at her. At the tears building in her eyes, the quiver of her lips, the bob of her throat as she swallows harshly.
It’s no different from the burn in my chest, the twisting of my stomach.
“Is she mine?”
She shudders and a tear drips from her eye.
“Sofie. Is. She. Mine?!”

Tyler grabs my arm and tugs me into what looks like an office. He closes the door behind us and spins me into him. “You really are a feisty little thing, aren’t you?”

“Fuck you, asshole.” I glare up at him, shaking his hand from my arm and stepping back.

“Damn, Liv, why don’t you tell me how you really feel?” he says with a smirk.

“Why? So it can go right over your egotistically enlarged head?”

“I might consider it for a moment… Actually, on second thought, you’re right. I won’t pay any attention.”

“You are the most arrogant, self-entitled, patronizing bastard I’ve ever had the displeasure of meeting in my life,” I hiss anyway. “And before you mention the pleasure, because you inevitably will, you should know the displeasure far outweighs the measly amount of pleasure you’ve given me.”

Tyler’s eyes darken and he closes in on me, grabbing the back of my head and pulling me into him. His fingers thread through my hair and tug my head back so I’m looking at him, and, “Measly bit of pleasure? Didn’t seem so small when you were screaming my name and begging for more.”

“Clearly you’ve never watched When Harry Met Sally. That movie taught a woman everything she needs to know about faking it.”

He presses his lips to mine in a crash of teeth and a tangle of tongue. He grips my hip and pulls me toward him forcefully, his grasp on my hair never easing as he sweeps his tongue through my mouth. The zinging tension of earlier is back, except this time it’s worse and it’s swirling around us and holding us together. Holding his mouth against mine, our bodies flush together.

My anger swiftly changes to desire at the feel of his teeth nibbling my bottom lip, and a whimper leaves me involuntarily when he pulls away.

“I don’t believe for a second you fake it, Liv.” He ghosts his nose along my jawline. “I can feel the realness of your reaction in your body. I saw it earlier—I felt it earlier. My fingers barely brushed your gorgeous arse and you moved away as if I’d run them along your pussy. Your body responds to me whether you want it to or not, and it does it so clearly. So obviously.”

“My body is a liar,” I breathe when he sucks on my earlobe lightly.

“Much like you.” His words are spoken again my skin with a gentle brush of his lips.

“My dislike of you is no lie, Tyler.”

“Well, your body didn’t get the memo, babe. Your body likes me. A fucking lot.”

Review:

Final Call is a sexy, sizzling, and addictive read. I freaking LOVE Dayton and Aaron. They are a powerhouse couple. Honestly, I didn’t think I could adore these two anymore after book one but I was so completely wrong! Final Call picks up right where Late Call left off. Dayton is still reeling (and rightfully so) over Aaron’s skeletons and has resorted to locking herself in her house/Liv’s apartment by herself eating ice cream and forgoing showering. After the required mourning/self-pity period Dayton decides to go back to work but interestingly enough, she isn’t getting booked for the jobs she’s used to. If you’ve read Late Call it will be no surprise that despite Dayton’s quick and heartbreaking exit from Paris, that Aaron isn’t about to give up.

Dayton, being the stubborn and intelligent woman that she is, isn’t going to just give in to Aaron. That wouldn’t be like her at all, and let’s be honest, what makes Dayton so likeable is her quick-wit and fiery personality. She has a no BS attitude and has enough self-respect to make Aaron work for forgiveness. It takes a little push from both Monique and Aunt Leigh to get Dayton to truly give Aaron another chance but when she finally comes around to the idea, things get interesting. While Dayton is trying to patch things up with Aaron, Naomi decides to stir things up.  As if she hasn’t caused enough problems for Aaron and Dayton already, Naomi lays out her cards and Dayton is forced to make a choice. Her decision, no matter what it is, could cost her the future she desires.

My favorite thing about Aaron and Dayton is that they are equals. Dayton isn’t afraid to take Aaron head on and vice versa. The push and pull in their relationship is done without insult or injury to the other. The tense moments are made better by the even more intense moments and there is a level of tenderness between the two that really displays the love in their relationship.  Aaron and Dayton’s relationship is one I can firmly get behind and I was rooting for them from the get-go.

Unsurprisingly, I found the Dayton and Aaron’s story to be captivating and full of my favorite things (lies, betrayal, blackmail, lust, love, beautiful men, London, Paris…I could go on and on). What I didn’t expect was to find myself enthralled with someone other than Aaron Stone but alas Tyler Stone intrigued and surprised me. With his devil-may-care attitude and cavalier love-life I didn’t expect a friendship to blossom between him and Dayton but it did and I appreciated that she had someone on her side during hurricane Naomi.

Final Call provided a stellar ending to Dayton and Aaron’s story, tying up loose ends from book one without feeling forced. I appreciated getting to see this couple’s relationship grow into something deeper and more mature. There are a lot of sexy times but like Late Call I never once felt that they overshadowed or took away from the plot. Final Call proves what I stated in my review of Late Call, that Emma Hart’s writing gets better and better with creative story lines and strong, sophisticated characters. Now…about Tyler’s book…

 Review:

*I received an eARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I have a confession: I ventured far outside my comfort zone picking Late Call up. I am so glad I did, though. I enjoyed Emma Hart’s other books so when I saw the blurb for Late Call, I had to read it. I really enjoyed this book, a lot. I will be honest, I was a little nervous that there would be little plot and a lot of sexual situations. I was really, really wrong, at least about the little plot part (insert winky face).

Mia Lopez is a high class call girl. Spending a night with her costs more than the average person’s yearly income. She’s smart, feisty, and extremely good at her job. She seems to be comfortable in her life and knows exactly what she wants. That is, until the night she’s ordered by her agent, Monique, to attend a dinner party with a mystery client. Little does Mia know that the man she’s about to take on as a client, is her former boyfriend and first love, Aaron Stone. It’s only one night, right? Wrong, Mia is contracted for the next six weeks to stand by Aaron’s side and play the part of Dayton, his girlfriend. It’s a tricky situation because call girls don’t fall in love…

I loved the relationship between Aaron and Dayton. The chemistry between them is palpable, starting as a slow simmer until it boils over. They’re both so headstrong and feisty which provides for a lot of entertainment. I can get on board with Aaron’s bossy, alpha demeanor. It’s obvious that Dayton let’s him make up the rules without sacrificing her self-respect and dignity. I love that about their relationship. There is a level of respect there that could have easily not existed. I found myself rooting for them throughout the entire book.

I really enjoyed the overall story-line as well. Hart takes us to some of the most romantic cities in the world and the descriptive language made me feel like I was there with them. I also thought the tension between Aaron and Dayton was well done and not too over the top. I think the conflicting feelings Dayton has are completely rational and I was actually kind of in love with her character. She was strong-willed, feisty, and willing to stand up for herself when Aaron was being a jerk. I also loved that we got to see more than just the call girl persona Dayton has mastered. We get to  see her. Her thoughts, her feelings, her passion.  I liked the more vulnerable side of Dayton.

Seeing as this is an erotic novel, there are a lot of sex scenes. I didn’t feel that they were really repetitive or over the top. I also enjoyed that they flowed with the story rather than feeling like there was sex for the sake of sex.

I’ve read quite a few of Emma Hart’s books and I have to say that this is my favorite one so far. You can really tell she’s becoming a master wordsmith and her writing has continued to get stronger and stronger. I would definitely recommend this book, but beware of the cliffhanger! I’ll be anxiously awaiting the arrival of book 2 in June!

 Excerpt:

Blake:

I tap her on the shoulder. “Do you want to …”
A pair of startlingly light blue eyes crash into mine. Blue. That’s what color they are. It’s the kind of blue that makes you stop dead and instantly makes you think of a crisp summer’s day, complete with beer and a barbecue. It’s also the kind of blue that shows everything – the hue too pale to hide shadows lurking beneath – it’s the flicker of darkness that makes me pause and stare at her.
I’ve seen those shadows before.
I know how they linger, barely scratching the surface before pulling you under. And I know the climb is always harder than the fall … If you’re lucky enough to get a grip on the climb.
“Do I …?” she questions shyly, raising her hand to her face then dropping it again.
“Um.” I cough and scratch the back of my neck. Her hesitant smile reminds me what I’ve actually approached her for. “Do you want to dance together? Since we have to pair off. You know. Yeah.”
Shit. I sound like an awkward teen boy who has no idea how to speak to a girl.
Her smile stretches a little and her eyes flit around the dance hall. Everyone is paired off and talking to each other quietly.
“I … Sure,” she replies.
“Great. I’m Blake. Blake Smith.”
“Abbi Jenkins.” Abbi’s hand slips into my outstretched one. My fingers curl around her smaller ones, but my focus isn’t on the silky smooth skin against mine; it’s on the gentleness of her tone and the way her lips moved when she said her name.
“Abbi,” I repeat. “Have you danced long?”
“Since I was eight.” She takes her hand from mine and clasps both of hers in front of her stomach protectively. “We all need a little something to escape in, right?”
Right. “Definitely.”

“You don’t get a love like ours and get to leave it behind.”

Kia James was never meant to return to her hometown of Harlan Grove, Alabama…
But she has.
And Reese Pembleton was definitely not supposed to still be in love with her the way she is him… But he is.

Last summer was the summer to end all summers. If she’s honest with herself, there’s so much more there than there ever was, but the way her dad walked out six years ago has shattered her belief of that fairytale love every girl craves.

Reese isn’t giving up so easily. His biggest mistake was not chasing after Kia the way he wanted to when she upped and left him without a word. Despite what she says, he knows her better than anyone, and he knows she still wants him the way he wants her. And this time, nothing will stop him from getting – and keeping – his girl.

But nothing is that easy. When Kia’s dad arrives back in town, family secrets come tumbling out she never realized existed. Everything her mom has ever told her about the reason he left is a lie – but how can she trust the man who, by his own admission, didn’t fight for her as hard as he could have?

Excerpt:

“Shit! Kia!” Reese calls after me. “I didn’t mean it like that!”

I ignore him and keep walking. Step, step, step. Keep going, Kia, don’t stop for him. His hand grabs my arm, and I turn, yanking my arm back as I near where his truck is parked.

“What, Reese? You’ve made it clear last summer was a mistake. You’re right. It was. It was just a whirlwind mess between two people who had no idea what they wanted from life.”

“I didn’t mean it like it came out. I just meant I didn’t want you to hate this place because of me.”

“I don’t hate it because of you.” I look at him and laugh bitterly. Shadows play across his face in the darkness. “I hate this place because of what it means to me.”

“What does it mean, Kia? Tell me.” He loosens his grip on my arm; his thumb gently stroking my skin.

“It means nothing,” I say quietly, stepping back. “Nothing.”

“You’re lying,” Reese steps closer and holds my other arm. “If it meant nothin’, you wouldn’t be running from me.”

“I’m not running from you! Why would I be? One summer, that’s all we had.”

“Is it?” he asks quietly. “One summer? Is that really all we had? Do you think my feelings disappeared the way you did? Do you think they upped and went in the middle of the night just like you?”

“I never said that-”

“‘Cause they damn well didn’t!”

“Rumor has it you’re seein’ someone, or have you forgotten that?” I throw back at him.

“Maybe I don’t care about her. The person I care about is front of me.”

“After eleven months? Why don’t I believe you?”

“Let me show you. Make you believe me.”

I shake my head. “You’re so fucking funny.” I pull myself from his grip and move toward my car, passing his truck.

“Am I?” he growls, grabbing my hand and pulling me toward him. My back hits the door of his truck, and he stops in front of me. He places his hands either side of my head, his face bent into mine. “Am I funny, Kia? Really?”

My heart is pounding furiously at his nearness, and I push at his arm. My blood is thundering through my body, my breathing coming hard and fast. I can feel the warmth emanating from his body. I want more. I need more. I want to feel his body pressed against mine, even if it’s just for a second. I need to feel it.

His hazel eyes collide with mine, and I can see he feels the same. It’s been a year. He still feels it. I still feel it.

“Jokes usually are funny,” I retort, trying to move away from him in an attempt to regain control of my body.

His mouth crashes into mine, his lips molding to mine. One of his hands cups the side of my head, the other resting on my waist. I grab his shirt when he nips my bottom lip. My mouth opens, and his tongue meets mine, stroking it in a gentle caress. Our bodies push together, and I drink him in, kissing him greedily.

Now, I remember. I remember why I can’t fight it. Why I’m powerless. Why, at nineteen, he is all there is.

I open my eyes as our mouths part. His lips are hovering over mine, close enough they could touch mine again, but they don’t. In the small gap between us all,I feel is the chilling night air where, just seconds ago, there was nothing but heat.

“Am I funny now, Kia?” he breathes, still holding my face.

“Yep,” I whisper, my voice slightly shaky. “You’re fucking hilarious.”

Reese’s hand leaves my waist and tugs the door open. “Then you better get in the truck so you can find out exactly how not funny I am.”

“I’m not…”

“Get in,” he growls, his eyes promising me a fight.

“No,” I say, pushing him back. I shake my head. “No.”

“What?”

I walk around him and away from him, walking backward. I shake my head, everything warring inside me. “I… No, Reese. I can’t.”

“Kia?” he calls.

“That…” I take a deep breath and stop at my car. “That shouldn’t have happened.”
